EU Demands Greater Cooperation With India In Countering Terrorism

Thursday, 5 November 2009 15:09
The European Union has demanded India to ensure better cooperation for tackling terrorism, stressing that it is keeping an eye on Pakistan so that the nation does not misuse the help rendered by the EU.
"It's true that the EU has delivered substantial aid to Pakistan for humanitarian purposes. We are extremely vigilant about the way our aid is used," said Daniele Smadja, ambassador and head of the EU delegation in New Delhi. The EU delegation is in Delhi for holding talks with India.
She was replying when told that India was concerned whether Pakistan will use the international aid provided to it for funding anti-India terrorists.
"We have various mechanisms in place to try to ensure that the aid is properly used," said the EU envoy before the 10th India-EU summit, which is slated to kick off in New Delhi on Friday.
"Whenever we have discussions with India, we listen very carefully to what it is saying about its neighbours," she said.
She also mentioned that EU and India should work together in a better way for tackling terrorism, adding that terrorism will be one of the subjects of foci during the meeting of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Premier of Sweden Fredrik Reinfeldt, who is currently the EU President, and European Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso. The EU's counter-terrorism coordinator Gilles de Kerkove visited India last month to explore ways to deepen counter-terror cooperation.
The other issues which will be discussed during the summit includes the current scenario of Pakistan and Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and the peace process in the Middle East.
